Interview Blunders You Want to Avoid ( And 15 Amusing Real- Life Examples)

Did you know, according to a recent press release by Career Builder, almost half of employers say they know if a job candidate is a good fit within the first five minutes and almost all of them say they know within 15 minutes. Fortunately, they also gave a list of some of the most common mistakes people make in an interview and I wanted to share them so that you can avoid doing the same.

10 Most Common Major Interview Mistakes
  1. Appearing disinterested
  2. Dressing inappropriately
  3. Appearing arrogant
  4. Talking negatively about current or previous employers
  5. Answering a cell phone or texting during the interview
  6. Appearing uninformed about the company or role
  7. Not providing specific examples
  8. Not asking good questions
  9. Providing too much personal information
  10. Asking the hiring manager personal questions

10 Most Common Body Language Mistakes

  1. Failure to make eye contact
  2. Failure to smile
  3. Bad posture
  4. Fidgeting too much in one’s seat
  5. Playing with something on the table
  6. Handshake that is too weak
  7. Crossing one’s arms over one’s chest
  8. Playing with one’s hair or touching one’s face
  9. Using too many hand gestures
  10. Handshake that is too strong

That's a lot of things to avoid doing, and over-thinking it can just make it worse. So, what's an interviewee to do? Well, “employers want to see confidence and genuine interest in the position,"  said Rosemary Haefner, Vice President of Human Resources at CareerBuilder. "The interview is not only an opportunity to showcase your skills, but also to demonstrate that you’re the type of person people will want to work with. Going over common interview questions, researching the company, and practicing with a friend or family member can help you feel more prepared, give you a boost in confidence, and help calm your nerves.” Don't worry too much. I doubt you'll do anything as ummm....interesting as the candidates below did.
