The contest is open to all high school-age (9-12th grade) composers, regardless of where you live. Any individual currently enrolled in a public or private high school or HS-level homeschool program may enter. No group compositions allowed.

First Place: $1000
Second Place: $750
Third Place: $500

Finalists (plus up to 3 family members will be provided travel/accommodation to San Francisco for April 27, 2104 Awards Ceremony!)

Midnight (PST) January 15, 2014
To Apply
A complete submission must contain:
  1. Application information
  2. Composer statement
  3. Score in .pdf format. (it can be a scan of a handwritten score, it does not need to be created in music software)
The entry must be an original composition for instrumentation of your choice or chorus for 3-10 musicians/voices. Choral works may be written for SSAATTBB. A notated score is required and finalists will be required to supply high quality, engraved parts. Compositions must be 5-8 minutes long. While there are no requirements concerning musical genre, the jury will be particularly focused on the work’s ability to engage and inspire the listener. The jury will evaluate works based on creativity as well as technical skill (harmony, melody, orchestration, and form).

Each entry must be accompanied by a personal statement from the composer that addresses TWO of the following:
  • The composer’s past music experience
  • How the composer got inspired and interested in music composition or
  • What the composer hopes to achieve in the future as a composer –how s/he hopes to inspire or engage other young listeners
The submission form requires parental approval for students less than 18 years of age. Finalists' pieces will be recorded by musicians, and hosted online for a popular vote to select the prize winners. All six finalists will be invited to the awards ceremony and concert on April 27, 2014 in San Francisco. Finalists who do not live in the Bay Area will receive airfare and local hotel accommodation for themselves and up to three family members for two nights (April 23-24, 2014).
