Thanks for a fantastic year and for reading, sharing, emailing, chatting and everything else you did to support Intern Like a Rockstar this year. This site started off with the idea of sharing what I wish I'd known when I was trying to intern in the music industry and it's amazing to be able to help people fulfill their dreams. This year we took things offline with a panel at Drexel University and a talked on Skype with new friends at Algonquin College in Canada and had some incredible internship listings from all over the world from London to Los Angeles. 1) Do This Before You Contact Anyone in the Music Industry 
Before you reach out to anyone  you need to do your research and understand what the person you are contacting actually does. There's no better way to waste your time than to ask the wrong person for help.

Making it in the music industry as an artist often involves a lot of personal selling. There are however right and wrong ways to go about doing that. Here are 5 of the most common mistakes artists make when it comes to trying to get the attention of music industry executives.

Guest blogger and award-winning engineer Steven J Goldman of Four Legs Records gave us a step-by-step guide to the most basic EQ trick you need to make your music sound better. 

How do you find somewhere to stay on a budget (usually an unpaid kind of budget) in a major city where you don't currently live for a summer internship? Here's a list of resources that can help. 

Belmont Sophomore Music Business major Teresa Sapichino takes us through her schedule to show you what it's really like to balance classes, homework, internships, and extracurriculars as a music business student. 

In February, I hosted a panel on music internship success at Drexel University with some of our Philadelphia partners that have listed internships here. Most of these companies are always looking for good interns and one -- Turtle Studios -- offers in-studio training on recording.

Spring Artist Management Internship in Los Angeles

Who we are: Constant Artists is a music management firm based in Los Angeles, currently providing worldwide management services for Spoon, Future Islands, Explosions in the Sky, Washed Out, Okkervil River, The Wrens, Black Joe Lewis, Divine Fits and Pickwick.

Internship Opportunities in Video, Marketing, Audio, or Non-profit with Roulette in New York


Here are several great opportunities at a cool performance space in Brooklyn for anyone interested in audio engineering, non-profit work, marketing and communication, or video. If you're not familiar with Roulette check out some of their fantastic press such as this piece in NY Mag and this one in the New York Times

Roulette offers hands-on internships for college students and recent graduates throughout the year. This unique opportunity provides working knowledge of a non-profit music venue with access to some of the world’s most exciting contemporary composers and musicians. 

Roulette operates with a small staff and our interns will interact with all departments on a regular basis. Responsibilities will range from event production to press and public relations to administrative tasks. Intern candidates must possess a strong command of the English language, excellent communication and writing skills, as well the ability to work and function in a dynamic and creative environment. 

Interns work a minimum of two days per week for a full trimester on a voluntary basis. In addition, interns may be asked to assist staff with evening and weekend programs, special events and other Roulette projects. The internship may be used to fulfill academic credits or requirements. Sorry, Roulette is unable to provide intern candidates with visas or stipends. 

Audio Engineering & Archiving 
An immersive introduction into all aspects of audio engineering and recording with hands-on experience with live sound performances. Interns will assist the Production Manager and crew with set-up and breakdown of equipment, organizing inventory, and editing audio files for archival purposes. 

For interns interested in the historical origins of Roulette Intermedium and experimental music, there are opportunities to work in audio archiving and database management. This position requires superior organizational skills and familiarity with computer-based audio programs. 

Marketing & Online Communication 
An internship with Roulette’s marketing department is an excellent opportunity to learn more about public and media relations, online communication, and graphic design. Interested applicants should have excellent writing and communication skills, as well as familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite and Web editing and design. 

Non-Profit Administration
Interns gain insight into the administration of a non-profit music venue, which includes event production, outreach and community partnerships, as well as educational initiatives for Roulette Kids. Applicants should be enthusiastic about interacting with the public and engaging Roulette’s diverse audience. This position may require working some weekends and occasional weekends, as needed. 

Video Production Roulette 
TV is an on-going innovative video series, which presents unique contemporary music in compelling and engaging performances given by the creators themselves. Interns selected to work with Roulette TV are involved in all aspects of the creative process of video production, from interviewing artists and composers to editing episodes. 5 Reasons Email is Essential to Online Marketing

In the world of Twitter, Instagram, and Snapchat, it may seem like email is old news akin to saving your work to a floppy disk (and if you don't know what that is then that only further proves my point). That assumption though is, frankly, wrong and if you're not taking advantage of email for marketing, you should reconsider. Email is a powerful, cost-effective tool that gives you the power to reach your fans directly and easily. 

Here's why you should be using email:

Ownership 
Do you recall when MySpace was the most popular social networking site? Countless brands and musicians dedicated all of their time to building a large following and some even chose to use MySpace as their actual website. So what happened when everyone left MySpace behind? Everyone lost the ability to contact the people they'd invested so much time in because they didn't own any of the data on MySpace. An email list is yours and you can control what you do with it without the risk of someone else taking away your access. Sure, people may unsubscribe or on a rare occasion change their email address, but you aren't very likely to lose your entire list just because an outside company controls your access to the information. 

Effectiveness 
Regardless of technology changes email still has the highest rate of success. How high? Well a study in the beginning of the year found it to be 40 times more effective for customer acquisition than both Facebook and Twitter combined(1). 

Cost
Even if you pay for an email management system, sending emails is still incredibly cheap. There is no better way to reach a large number of people for very low cost. If you follow the applicable laws of email marketing and have a list that's easy to manage without a customer management system, you might even be able to do it for free. 

Test of Time
As online trends change and move from Xanga to MySpace to Facebook to Twitter to Instagram, and maybe Ello, email has remained a constant. In fact, you need an email address to even sign up for most social networks and apps. That means if your fans are on social media it's almost certain they have an email address they check regularly too. So why fight for attention alongside pictures of people's kids when you can go right to the source? 

Ubiquitous 
Regardless of country, region, internet provider, or familiarity with technology, nearly everyone has an email address. Your mom, aunt, little brother, probably even grandparents are all on email. That's simply not the case with social media which tends to be dominated by certain markets (for instance Pinterest is predominantly women). In fact, 91% of US consumers use email on a daily basis (1).

PS. Email is a great tool, however don't make the mistake of starting your list by assuming your friends and family want to be on it. Instead, make sure everyone on your list has agreed to be part of it and start by simply adding a sign up form to your website or taking a clip board to your gigs.

How To Write a Killer Cover Letter: Ask Not What The Company Can Do For You

"My fellow Americans, ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country."
- John F. Kennedy
It's a profound and famous quote about the responsibilities that come with citizenship, but it can also be applied to job searching by changing a few key words: "Ask not what the company can do for you, ask what you can do for the company." 
So what does mean? It means that if you're writing your cover letter all about why you want to work at that company and what you hope to gain you're doing it wrong. Sure, HR people want to know you are genuinely passionate and excited about the work that company does, and you should showcase that. However, hiring managers are looking to find a person with a solid track record of real results. They want the people that can get the job done, improve profits, refine systems to save time or money, and help the company to grow and improve. The best cover letters are the ones that tell them how you will do that. 
Does the job call for social media skills? Great, tell them about the tweets you sent for a business that got 50 retweets and 35 favorites. Do they want someone with experience in PR? Tell them about the feature you secured in a local paper. (Don't make these things up, these are just examples.)  Think about your work history and experience and how it applies directly to the job you are applying for and tell them how you have already used these skills to help grow or improve a business. 
So stop writing cover letters thinking about why you want this job so badly and start asking yourself what you can do for each company.

The communications internship will consist of working with the Communications Director and the Communications Coordinator – New Media on a range of projects for both the GRAMMY Foundation and MusiCares that involve public relations, marketing research, social media networking and the Foundations' Web sites. Future of Music Coalition is a national non-profit education, research and advocacy organization that identifies, examines, interprets and translates the challenging issues at the intersection of music, law, technology and policy. The Philadelphia Chapter is looking for a Fall 2014 Chapter Intern and it could be you! We're looking for a student that is detail oriented, knowledgeable in social media, graphics, and of course the music industry!

5 Mistakes Artists Make In Promoting Their Music

Making it in the music industry as an artist often involves a lot of selling of yourself and your music. There are however right and wrong ways to go about doing that. Here are 5 of the most common mistakes artists make when it comes to promoting their music and trying to get the attention of music industry executives.


1) Reaching out to the Wrong People
The easiest way to waste your time and annoy someone in one move is by targeting the wrong people in your promotional efforts. You need to have at least a cursory understanding of the music industry and understand who is responsible for what. Don't send an email to a manager asking if they will be your agent (bonus points if you know it's actually against the law for them to do that in some states). Don't write to a publisher asking for a manager. And don't expect a talent buyer to get your song on the radio. If you can't take your career seriously enough to do the research required to understand who you are writing to and what they do, then they won't take you seriously either. For example,  while my site is about the music industry, I don't actually write about or promote music. Still, I get a surprising number of emails from artists hoping I will feature them. It doesn't matter how great their music is, it's never going to happen and they are wasting their time. Don't make that same mistake.

Can Music Streaming Be Profitable?

These days music is everywhere, but that doesn't mean people are necessarily buying it. Streaming services like Spotify, Pandora, iTunes Radio, and even Youtube provide on-demand accessibility along with plenty of controversy. Music news sites are full of posts decrying how little artists make from internet streams and how much the companies providing these services struggle to earn a profit. If music streaming and instant access is to be the way of the future though, it will need a sound, and fair, business model to back it.


Here's a look from Statista at the profits of two of the biggest names in music streaming: Spotify and Pandora.

"Both companies are generating more than $500 million in annual revenue from advertising and subscriptions. Yet both companies share the same problem: As user numbers rise and revenue subsequently increases, so do licensing fees and other costs...An analysis published by Generator Research last year concluded that the streaming business in its current state was "inherently unprofitable" and that "no current music subscription service — including marquee brands like Pandora, Spotify, and Rhapsody — can ever be profitable, even if they execute perfectly...If Apple really acquires Beats Electronics to double down on streaming, the company will have one huge advantage over its competitors: It doesn't need to make money off streaming. Apple will likely be more than happy to take a loss with its streaming service, as long as it gets people to buy more of the company's gadgets."

Is the Beats purchase paving the way for Apple to succeed with music streaming by allowing it to be a loss leader, as big box retailers like Walmart and Target have done with CDs for years? Is this the only way music streaming can actually succeed? What do you think?

A Day in the Life of a Music Business Major at Belmont University

This is a guest post from Teresa Sapichino. Teresa is a Sophomore at Belmont University majoring in Music Business with a business emphasis. Since attending Belmont Teresa has worked many events such as, Country Radio Seminar, Tin Pan South, and All 4 The Hall. She aspires to work in publicity and is expected to graduate May 2017.

Hey Y’all!

I just finished my freshman year at Belmont University in Nashville, TN. It was a crazy year and my second semester much more so! With school two days a week, interning two more days and then having the weekend off it tends to catch up to you! Lets also not forget working all differentkind’s of events or going to different shows at least once a week! This is just the life of a Music Business student and it’s a lot to adjust to but if you love it, it comes easy! So, I’m going to give Y’all a sample of what a normal day would look like for me! (Taken right from my calendar!)

Thursday March 27,
7:45 AM- Wake Up
8 AM -3:15 PM-CLASS
3:20 PM-4 PM- Get ready for Tin Pan South (Songwriter festival in Nashville, TN)
4:05 PM-4:30 PM- Pick up supplies from NSAI and go to Hard Rock
4:30 PM-End of show- Run Hard Rock Café, Tin Pan South Shows
11:30 PM- Get home, Do homework for the day.

For a week in March I worked a songwriters festival as a venue coordinator, So basically I was in-charge of making sure the venue ran smoothly and all of the volunteers understood what they have to do and helped them with anything they needed!

On Monday’s and Wednesdays  I would Intern and a normal day for that looked a lot like this.

8:00 AM Wake up
9:30 AM -2:30 PM- Intern
3 PM-3:15: Get ready for CRS (Country Radio Seminar) Interview
3:20 PM- 4 PM: Walk to CRS office and interview
4:10-4:30PM Walk back to Belmont and leave for CMT Listen Up! Taping
5 PM- End Of Show: Taping for CMT Listen Up!

And for the days that I’m just going to Class this is what it looks like!

7:45 AM- Wake up
8 AM- 9:15 AM: Survey of Recording Technology
9:30 AM-10:45 AM: Popular Music Experience
11 AM- 12:15 PM: Rhetoric of Country Music
12:30 PM-1:45 PM: Survey of Recording Technology
2 PM- 3:15 PM: Fundamentals of Speech Communications.

That pretty much sums up what an average day would look like! Mind you there were plenty days that I would sit in my dorm and do Homework all night or catch up on the sleep I missed during the days / weeks that there wasn’t much time for sleeping. There is always time for friends scheduled in my daily calendar because even though you have tons of work you have make time for your friends or you will go crazy! Even if you eat lunch or dinner with them! I also tend to forget that you have to eat dinner until the dinning hall is about to close or is already closed so that became a problem, so don’t forget to eat…and sleep. All I'm Askin' is For A Little Respect

In school, when you had a substitute teacher your first reaction was probably "yes, we can relax." Some of your classmates probably quite literally put their feet up and decided to do nothing. Maybe they took things even further and outright broke the rules or attempted to get away with things they otherwise would never attempt. "This test is actually open notes." "We're allowed to have our phones in this class." Sound familiar? It seems innocent enough, but really it's all disrespectful. It's saying to that teacher that they are not worthy of your attention or attentiveness.

What does this have to do with career success? Well, you may overlook that receptionist or secretary just as you would that substitute teacher. You may look down on them, fail to thank them for their help, ignore them, or simply be rude to them. That would be a huge mistake. See, just as that substitute can write up a report telling your "regular" teacher how you behaved and can still land you a detention as a result, you can bet that CEO is going to ask his or her assistant for an opinion before making a hiring decision. Don't overlook someone just because you don't feel they are a decision maker. Everyone deserves your respect and you should treat them as such. If you don't you may not feel the consequences right away, but they will certainly exist.

Country Radio Internship with Cafe Nashville

Cafe Nashville is an internationally syndicated, country music radio show broadcast from Music Row in Nashville, TN.


Requirements:
  • Multitasking
  • Maintaining a positive attitude 
  • Operating Pro Tools (must have experience)
  • Creating radio imaging (from sound fx)
  • Editing a radio talk show(cutting out pointless content while maintaining flow and intelligibility)
  • Being very organized

The time commitment is 3-5 days a week and 4-6 hours a day but is moderately flexible.

The intern would work out of our Nashville office.

Life Lessons from High School: Show Your Work

You know in high school when your math and science teachers wouldn't give you credit for solving a problem correctly unless you showed the work? Or when your English and history teachers said you needed facts and citations to support your opinions in essays? It probably drove you nuts. Why does it matter, you asked, if the answer is still correct? Isn't that the point? Well, no, it isn't. 

It was actually a much bigger and more important life lesson in disguise. See, life isn't always about getting it right. More often than not, you won't. It is about understanding how you got there and learning from your mistakes. It's about seeing what made that effort fail or succeed and, in the case of a career or personal goal, about using that information to explain and understand your actions. This is what allows you to either continue to exceed or refine your efforts until you do. Success isn't about knowing how to get it right the first time, it's about perseverance and trying again until you do. You can't do that if you don't "show your work."

Internship Opportunities with WXPN in Philadelphia, PA

Here's a fantastic opportunity with non-commercial radio tastemaker WXPN in Philadelphia. The station has helped to break countless artists in the worlds of folk, alternative, rock, contemporary, blues, indie, and everything in between. It's actually one of the places I interned so I can say with certainty it's a great place to be. Internship Opportunities with Roulette in Brooklyn

Here's a fantastic opportunity at a really cool performance space in Brooklyn for anyone interested in audio engineering, non-profit work, marketing and communication, or video. If you're not familiar with Roulette check out some of their fantastic press such as this piece in NY Mag and this one in the New York Times.

Roulette offers hands-on internships for college students and recent graduates throughout the year. This unique opportunity provides working knowledge of a non-profit music venue with access to some of the world’s most exciting contemporary composers and musicians.

Roulette operates with a small staff and our interns will interact with all departments on a regular basis. Responsibilities will range from event production to press and public relations to administrative tasks. Intern candidates must possess a strong command of the English language, excellent communication and writing skills, as well the ability to work and function in a dynamic and creative environment.

Interns work a minimum of two days per week for a full trimester on a voluntary basis. In addition, interns may be asked to assist staff with evening and weekend programs, special events and other Roulette projects. The internship may be used to fulfill academic credits or requirements. Sorry, Roulette is unable to provide intern candidates with visas or stipends.

How to Find Affordable Housing as an Intern

You scored an internship for the summer at your dream company. Go you! Except that dream company is in New York and you aren't. How do you find somewhere to stay on a budget (usually an unpaid kind of budget) in a major city where you don't currently live. I spent one summer interning in New York and another in Los Angeles despite going to school in Philadelphia, so I've definitely learned from experience how to find relatively affordable short term accommodations. So, today I'm sharing some resources and advice to help make the search easier for you.

5 Things You Need to Do on Every Job Application

Finding  a job is tough, especially in this market. You may be surprised to know though that I've heard from a number of employers that sometimes it's the simples of mistakes that lands someones resume in the reject pile. See, when the competition is as tough as it is right now it doesn't take much to find a reason to turn someone down. Typos, impersonalized cover letters, and other little mistakes can make a big difference. So, here are 5 things you need to be sure you do on every job application. 
  • Follow It
    • Following directions is important. It’s easy to overlook something or try to beat the system, but if you can’t follow directions in an application how can you be expected to do it on the job?
  • Sell It
    • Tell them why you want this specific position with this specific company and why you’d be good at it in your cover letter.
  • Personalize It
    • Try to address your cover letter to someone specific where possible and always customize your letter so that it is specific to the company to which you are applying. There's really no better way to have your application trashed than by telling Universal why you really want to work for Warner.
  • Check It
    • Be completely certain you have included your contact info on all documents, used proper spelling and grammar, followed directions, and used your manners. Don't use slang, incomplete sentences, text message speak, or have a sense of entitlement. There are plenty of other applicants who don't think they should get an award just for showing up. So double check everything you send in for completeness and correctness. And then check it again.
  • Track It
    • Keep track of what you apply for, who you speak to, and the status of each application, follow up but do it in a way that's polite and not overly pushy. There's a fine line between persistent and obnoxious, don't cross it.
