How to Get a Major Label Job: College Reps

We've already discussed that one of the best ways to do this is to get your foot in the door through some other job or connection and that one of the best times to do this is while you are in college. There is, however, another advantage to working towards a major label job while you are in college that we haven't mentioned yet: college rep programs

What It Is
A college rep is a college student who works for a major label and promotes upcoming record releases, shows, and artists on and around a college campus. It is a great way to make connections and learn about the music industry, plus these jobs usually pay. Have you ever seen posters for Kelly Clarkson or Lady Gaga around your campus? That was most likely the work of a college rep.

What You'll Need
If you want be a college rep you'll need

  • A great resume
  • A car (yes, this is usually a requirement),
  • Willingness to be outgoing,
  • Free time
  • An interest in mainstream pop, rock, rap, etc.
  • Knowledge of local hang outs and venues
  • To be a college student
How to Find a Position
Getting a job as a rep is difficult because there are only so many positions in each region and they are usually only filled when one college rep has graduated. One way to get one is by figuring out who the rep is in your area and building a relationship so that he or she can recommend you when he or she graduates. Otherwise, the best way is to check every once in a while on the four major labels job sites, which you can find links for here, particularly as the end of the term nears.
